Starship's Tenth Launch Attempt Delayed

Elon Musk's SpaceX announced on Sunday local time that it had called off the tenth launch attempt of Starship from its launch site in Texas due to a technical issue. This launch was highly anticipated, with hopes of achieving a series of key developmental milestones that had previously been unattainable due to early failures.

Details of the Delay and the Cause

The 70.7-meter-tall 'Super Heavy' booster and the 52-meter-tall 'Starship' upper-stage rocket were ready at SpaceX's Starbase launch facility and had begun fueling up, scheduled for liftoff at 7:35 PM U.S. Eastern Time (Monday morning Beijing time). However, about 30 minutes before ignition, SpaceX announced on platform X that it would halt the launch to investigate a ground system fault.

Impact of the Delay on SpaceX's Plans

Musk was originally scheduled to unveil the latest developments in the development of 'Starship' before the rocket launch, but the temporarily arranged live broadcast was ultimately canceled. Similar delays have typically been resolved within days. According to the SpaceX website, the company currently plans to reattempt the launch as early as August 25 local time (or Tuesday morning Beijing time).

Importance of the Starship Project

As the core of SpaceX's next-generation heavy-lift launch vehicle, 'Starship' not only holds a strategic position in the company's future launch business but is also key to realizing Musk's ambitions for Mars exploration. However, this project has faced multiple setbacks this year: two early flight test failures, another setback in the space stage during the ninth flight, and a large-scale explosion at the ground test stand in June, with debris flying even into neighboring Mexico. Consequently, SpaceX's long-standing R&D path of 'progress through failure' is being tested.

Future of Starship and Technical Challenges

Despite this, the company continues to accelerate the production of the new generation of 'Starship' at the massive Starbase factory to support ongoing test flights. NASA also hopes to use it to carry out the first manned mission to the Moon since the Apollo program around 2027. These ups and downs highlight the technical complexity of the latest version of 'Starship'. The new generation of rockets is equipped with stronger thrust, potentially more durable heat shields, and more robust flaps to ensure stability and safety during atmospheric re-entry. These improvements are also key to the rapid reusability that Musk has long emphasized.

Launch Plan and Experiments

According to the plan, the entire system was supposed to lift off at local sunset, with the 'Starship' upper-stage rocket separating from 'Super Heavy' at tens of miles altitude. Unlike previous attempts to use a launchpad giant mechanical arm to recover the landing, 'Super Heavy' will this time target the Gulf of Mexico for a soft water landing experiment to verify the configuration of the backup engine. 'Starship' will ignite briefly, further enter space, attempt to release the first batch of simulated 'Starlink' satellites, and ignite again during a suborbital flight. Subsequently, it will re-enter the atmosphere over the Indian Ocean, a crucial test of whether the new heat shield tiles and flaps can withstand extreme heat impacts. In the past, the outer layers of rockets have been severely eroded by extreme heat during multiple re-entry operations. SpaceX stated on its website: "Starship’s re-entry trajectory is intentionally designed to push the aft flaps to the structural limit at entry max dynamic pressure to test their performance."
