Archer Aviation: Pioneering the Future of Urban Air Mobility

Archer Aviation (ACHR) aims to redefine urban transportation with its electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. While the company currently generates no revenue, investors are hopeful that this will change soon. The company's flagship aircraft, the Midnight, is nearing commercialization. By this time next year, Archer could be offering air taxi services in multiple markets. The excitement surrounding the business has propelled Archer's market capitalization to around $6 billion. However, Archer's shares are down 3% this year (as of Sept. 22), and are now more than 30% below their 52-week high of $13.92, reached in May. Is now the right time to add the stock to your portfolio?

Commercialization Could Trigger a Stock Rally

The major catalyst that many investors eagerly await is Archer's commencement of passenger transport and commercialization. This would not only allow the business to generate a steady revenue stream but also showcase the aircraft and demonstrate its potential as a viable solution to traffic congestion in urban centers. Archer has been working on certifying its Midnight aircraft with regulators and may begin offering regular air taxi services sometime next year. A significant opportunity lies in large markets such as Los Angeles, where traffic congestion is a major issue. Archer has been named the "Official Air Taxi Provider of the LA28 Olympic Games," providing a valuable platform to showcase its capabilities to a global audience. Furthermore, Archer has delivered aircraft to the United Arab Emirates and initiated a flight test program there, potentially marking one of its initial market entries.

The Key Question Mark Surrounding Archer's Business

There is undeniable demand for alleviating congestion in major cities, and eVTOLs have the potential to play a significant role in this solution. These aircraft offer environmentally friendly, zero-emission transportation options, attracting interest from numerous businesses. Archer's order book currently stands at approximately $6 billion, indicating substantial demand for its aircraft. However, a critical question remains: Can this translate into a profitable and sustainable business model? Answering this question will likely take considerable time. Established commercial airplane manufacturer Boeing, for instance, often struggles to maintain a gross profit margin exceeding 10%. The piloted Midnight can accommodate only four passengers. To make this a significant aspect of its business, Archer would need to scale operations substantially to generate substantial revenue while maintaining affordable prices for its customers. During this expansion phase, costs are expected to escalate, potentially leading to further stock dilution.

Archer's Stock May Appear Cheaper, But Risks Remain High

Over the past 12 months, Archer's stock has tripled in value, potentially leading to profit-taking and the recent decline. Despite this, the stock remains highly valued, particularly given the absence of consistent revenue and a clear path to profitability. Archer remains a speculative investment at this stage and should be treated accordingly. This investment is primarily suited for investors with a high risk tolerance who can afford to lose most or all of their investment. If considering investing in Archer, investors may want to consider balancing their portfolio with safer, more established stocks or S&P 500 index funds to mitigate overall risk. Additionally, monitoring regulatory developments and competitive activity in the eVTOL space is crucial for assessing shifts in the overall landscape.
